QUICK INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS: Slackintosh is splitted in two different iso images. You'll need the second image ONLY if you plan to install KDE and/or teTeX. * Download the iso images you need and burn them with 'cdrecord' or similar applications. * Insert the first CD into your CDROM-Drive and start your Mac. * Hit 'c' a after you hear the 'startup tune'. You should now see the 'yaboot:' prompt. Now: -> Hit ENTER to continue with the default kernel -> Type 'installfb' and hit ENTER if the default kernel doesn't like your monitor (Flickers) -> Type 'alt1' and hit ENTER to use an older kernel (2.6.11.2) only use this image if your computer hangs using the default (2.6.13.2) kernel. If you have to use the 'alt1' kernel, please read the 'replace the kernel' instructions below * After the system is done booting, login as root (no password) and run 'mac-fdisk /dev/your_harddrive' if you need to create partitions. -> You need a 'partition map' (hit 'i' if you don't have one) -> You need a 'bootstrap partition (hit 'b' to create one) -> You need a normal linux-partition, hit 'c' to create a newone -> A swap partition is recommended. Create a new partition using 'c' and calling it 'swap' * Run 'setup' :-) REPLACE THE KERNEL *************************************************** * You don't need to follow these steps UNLESS you * * had to use 'alt1' while installing Slackintosh * *************************************************** 1. Finish the installation and reboot the system 2. Boot again using the cdrom: hit 'c' 3. At the yaboot prompt, type: alt1 root=/dev/your_root_partition example: 'alt1 root=/dev/hda3' 4. The installed Slackintosh system will start to boot. 5. Login and mount the installer-cd (#1) 6. Replace the kernel: cat /mnt/cdrom/boot/vmlinuxalt1 > /boot/vmlinux 7. Run 'ybin' 8. Reboot 9. The system should now be bootable from your harddrive. You are missing the kernel-modules for 2.6.11.2, so please (re)compile your own kernel to get a 'clean' setup ############################################################################### What is SlackIntosh? ==================== Slackintosh is a port of Slackware GNU/Linux to PPC (Macintosh). Russell Kroll was the first person who ported Slackware to PPC (http://slackintosh.exploits.org), but the project stalled with an unfinished 9.1 .. I (Adrian) started again from scratch porting 10.1 to PPC, and i've stolen the name 'Slackintosh'... Please note that this port was not done by Russell, don't send him Bugreports ;-) . Is it real Slack? ================= Almost. I used the the Sources + SlackBuild files from Slackware. ..but I had to make a few changes: * We used 'binutils 2.15.94.something' (2.15.92 doesn't like ppc) to build everything. The Installer uses BusyBox 1.0 and Linux 2.4 is not included, only 2.6.X (Runs better on PPC .. imho) * extra/ testing/ is different/not finished * Some Packages are missing because they made no sense on ppc or/and they are broken and rarely used * The installer may be somehow funky... but it works.. Upgrading from 10.1 to 10.2 =========================== Upgrading Slackintosh is the same as upgrading Slackware, read Pat's UPGRADE.TXT instructions. You could also try slapt-get: * Download the Package for 10.1 * Install it and run 'slapt-get --update ; slapt-get --upgrade'. * Edit '/etc/slapt-get/slapt-getrc' and change 10.1 to 10.2 * Run 'slapt-get --update ; slapt-get --dist-upgrade' and pray :-) Where to get / Report bugs ========================== WWW: http://slackintosh.workaround.ch Send Comments, Requests, Bugs to: workaround.ch is hosted by Bluewin
